SCID

Due to a reduction in funds allocated for distribution, as a result of the downturn in the oil industry, this SCID fund will close to new applications until further notice.

Apologies to those organisations that were hoping to apply, we hope in the future to be able to re-open to application process.

What is SCID?

The PESGB Sub Committee for Investments and Disbursements (SCID) was initiated by Doug Fenwick in 2005. SCID utilises PESGB surplus from the biennial PETEX event to make disbursements in line with the objective of the Society:

“To encourage, for the public benefit, education in the scientific and technical aspects of petroleum exploration”

With this in mind, requests for funding are reviewed at SCID with a view to disbursement of funds that provide educational benefit to PESGB Members and/or the general public.

What does SCID do?

Offering sponsorship of more than £500,000 in the past 24 months, the PESGB has supported almost 30 highly successful projects across the UK. A review of historic SCID funding demonstrates support for a wide variety of member benefit projects, which have included:

  • Museum Support
    • The Dorking Museum
    • Rotunda Museum
  • Publication of
    • Southern Permian Basin Atlas
    • Virtual Seismic Atlas
    • 2nd edition of Geological Field Guide to the Sedimentary Rocks of Northern Scotland
  • Undergraduate field work projects across the country
  • Geobus
    • Outreach educational earth science demonstrations to schools
  • Earth Science Teachers Association (ESTA) conference support
  • Cambridge University Time Truck
  • Durham University Petroleum Geoscience Database
  • Imperial College Barrel Awards
  • Aberdeen University Scholar Awards

Almost 75% of the SCID budget has gone to the funding of MSc's in Petroleum Geology. At £412,885 support, PESGB is the largest sponsor of MSc's in the field in the UK. Moreover, £86,000 have gone towards external charitable purposes.

What impact has PESGB funding had?

In the last 24 months, PESGB disbursement projects have directly impacted upon 133,330 poeple of all ages and backgrounds across the UK, with indirect impacts on many more. The most important work has been done in the school sector, affecting more than 80,000 school children, for example during the Edinburgh International Science Festival which reached over a quarter of all Scottish primary school children.

"PESGB's support this year has ensured the delivery of inspirational sciences experiences to thousands of children, young people and adults" Edinburgh Science Festival

"PESGB funding for my MSc made the whole shebang possible, I could not have afforded it otherwise, and for that I will be eternally grateful" Robert Horne

"Your support is invaluable!" Heather Prior

"Having a sponsored workshop was so greatly appreciated. We are a very small school and funds are low. This is a most valuable event in our school year" teacher, Generation Science tour

"Thanks to everyone at Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain for its fantastic support" Darrell Williams

Who makes up SCID?

The sub committee consists of the current: Secretary, President, President Elect, Treasurer, Director Education & Training and the Executive Director.
