Topic: Large Scale Carbon Capture & Storage: What is it? How do we enable it? And why we need to do it NOW!

Abstract
Martin Jagger, is Operations Director at WeConnect Energy and is an advisor on Energy Transition and Decarbonisation.  During a 36 year career with Shell International he worked throughout the Middle East, including assignments within ADNOC’s Executive Office, as advisor to the current Iraqi Oil Minister, as Shell’s Exploration Ventures Manager for the Middle East and as Business Opportunity Manager for the Saudi Gas Initiative. In 2007 he established Shell’s Carbon Capture and Storage Centre of Excellence and supported the development of emerging international standards, regulation and policy structures for safe carbon storage.  He is lead author of the Carbon Capture and Storage Methodology accepted under the UNFCCC Clean Development Mechanism at COP17.

To date industry players have created ca. 40 mtpa of carbon storage capacity globally – capacity that has taken more than 30 years to achieve.  To continue storage activities at this scale and pace means it would take 200-220 years to reach the 2040 targets outlined under IEA Sustainable Development Scenarios (2 deg C).  Martin will discuss the challenges facing us if we are to ever achieve implementation of Carbon Capture & Storage at a meaningful and impactful scale.
