Topic: Machine Learning and the Marine Near Surface – Example Applications for Site Investigation
Abstract:
Modern marine site investigation poses many challenges, particularly in the rapidly developing offshore renewables market. While the survey areas continue to increase in size and move into deeper water, leading to inflating data volumes and operational challenges, the requirements for ultra-high-resolution (sub-m scale) characterisation of the ground conditions remain.
In light of this, machine learning techniques have garnered significant interest in recent years, offering better scaling to large data sets than traditional methods and the tantalising potential to leverage geotechnical ground conditions from geophysical data. There is currently a collective appetite within all facets of the marine site investigation industry for the development and application of more advanced processing and interpretation methods. Particular areas of interest include (but are not limited to): extracting more/new information from extant data to permit smarter, more cost-effective second or third phase operations; reducing or better quantifying the uncertainties in both qualitative and quantitative characterisation of the subsurface, together with the subsequent impact on infrastructure design; and improving reliability/reproducibility of interpretive results.
While machine learning is undoubtedly not a magic bullet, in this presentation we will show how machine learning of various forms can be used in different ways to reduce uncertainty, increase productivity, and optimise the cost benefit of all data acquired throughout a project lifetime.
