Speaker: Pete Webb

Topic: ‘The Conversation’- Fracking Shale For Oil and Gas – a summary

Abstract
Pete lives in the Peak District, and has given this talk to many organisations in Greater Manchester and Cheshire over the last 8 years. Fracking shale has been a contentious topic, generating a significant public outcry and, inevitably, much disinformation. Pete’s talk looks at 4 aspects of fracking that are often used by its opponents: toxicity of the fracking fluid; pollution of aquifers and the atmosphere; earthquakes; and effects on the landscape. Pete looks at each of these aspects and shows that the truth about them is not what the protest movement would have people believe. Pete will then touch on our increasing reliance on imported gas (currently 56%) and the size of the potential shale gas resource, c. 1,700 TSCF. Pete has often been treated with skepticism before the talk, and has occasionally been heckled during it, but the most common reaction after the talk is “well, you’ve convinced me, the protesters are talking a load of rubbish”.
