Topic: The Peak District – its Geology and Economic Legacy

Abstract
The Peak District is underlain by a variety of sedimentary rocks that were deposited during the Carboniferous Period, between 360 and 300 million years ago, when the region lay on the equator.  It also hosts the remnants of a Miocene river system.  The variety of rock type gives rise to a diversity of scenery, much enjoyed by ramblers, climbers and cavers.  In addition, the Peak District hosts a rich legacy of economic wealth from building stone to lead and copper ores, some of which is historical and some still active to the present day.
