Topic: Exploring for Oil and Gas in the Republic of Armenia

Tim Papworth has been involved with Armenia since he visited first in July 1994. He has seen many changes in Armenia starting from a ex-Soviet republic recovering from the disastrous 1988 Spitak earthquake which killed at least 25,000 people, to a modern free and democratic republic, which on 25th May sent its own satellite into orbit! Armenia is an exceptional geological opportunity which has been shaped through millions of years of subduction and collision of the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The oil industry started in 1948.

Tim will talk about his Armenian experiences, providing some technical information, but also how his views on oil exploration work programs have evolved over time and will give an overview of the opportunities that remain.

Tim Papworth, Independent Consultant (semi-retired)

Tim has over 45 years of industry experience, including all aspects of geophysical exploration with particular emphasis on seismic interpretation. Semi-retired but still working on selected projects. He advises on general oil and gas exploration matters, managing comprehensive exploration programs including geological mapping, remote sensing, gravity acquisition, seismic acquisition and drilling.

He has worked extensively in Armenia but also on many projects worldwide – North Sea, Norway, offshore Holland, Northern Ireland, Isle of Skye, Egypt, onshore Spain, offshore Greece, onshore Namibia, onshore Sarawak, offshore Papua/New Guinea, Tunisia, Oklahoma, East China Sea, Nigeria, Libya, Gabon, Syria, India, Pakistan, Georgia, West Siberia, UK onshore and West Mediterranean.
