Event Information

Speaker: Jane Whaley, Associate Editor, GEO ExPro Magazine

Topic: Milos: A Geologist’s Ideal Holiday

Abstract:

The volcanic island of Milos is a horseshoe-shaped gem rising out of the azure waters of the Aegean Sea. It has beautiful beaches, classic white hilltop villages and stunning scenery with a central mountain rising to 750m with wonderful views in all directions and is famous as the  place where the Venus de Milo was discovered – and where pirates hid.

And for the geotourist? Something to wonder at round every corner, even though the island is almost entirely made up of Neogene and Quaternary volcanics. There are volcanic plugs and craters, fumaroles  and  multicoloured rocks resulting from geothermal and geochemical alteration, as well as brilliant white ash flow sediments which exhibit micro sedimentary and structural features.

This talk will take you on some short, highly illustrated wanders around the island – designed to be a taster rather than a detailed analysis of the geology!
