Abstract and Prof. Mike Searle bio

Geological Evolution of the Himalaya
50 million years of earthquakes and mountains building
With Professor Mike Searle, University of Oxford

Mountains are the expression of a constantly changing planet, modifying its surface, climate and chemistry. Mountains have been worshiped, conquered and explored. Mountains have made and shaped civilisations.

The most infamous of the Earth’s mountains form part of the Himalaya Range, which straddles five countries – Pakistan, India, Bhutan, Nepal and China. The Himalaya formed as a result of the collision between two tectonic plates about 50 million years ago forcing ocean floor to the roof of the World! Since collision, India has shunted northwards into Asia causing a trainwreck of deformed rock that now forms the Karakoram, Pamirs, Tien Shan and KunLun mountain ranges, capped by the high plateau of Tibet along the Asian Plate.

Join Professor Mike Searle from the University of Oxford, as he uses his experience as a geologist and extreme mountaineer, to unravel the complex history of the greatest continental collision in the last 500 million years of Earth history.
