Sunbird-1, the play-opening well which targets Miocene carbonate prospectivity in the Lamu Basin, was drilled in early 2014 in block L10a to a total depth of 2850 mKB, in water 723 m deep. It encountered oil and gas at the crest of the primary target. Sources for the oil and gas are considered to be Palaeocene-Eocene in age and from a different source to the widely-reported oil seep on Pemba Island.

Sunbird-1 results indicate potential for more substantial oil and gas discoveries within similar plays in the Tembo Trough. Further prospects exist deeper in the basin more proximal to the likely source rock.
