Neil Frewin, Shell International
President Elect

neilI am honoured to have been nominated as a candidate for President-Elect of the PESGB, an association in which I already enjoy an active role. Since completing a PhD at Royal Holloway University Of London in 1993, I have been privileged to have had an international career with Shell, Hess and BG Group across a broad range of exploration geoscience and management. My early career was in the research and application of petroleum geochemistry and basin analysis for Shell. In 2002, I joined Shell’s global new ventures group, later taking responsibility for growth activities in the Asia-Pacific region. From 2009 to 2012, I was accountable for Shell’s Carnarvon Basin exploration program in Australia, which was an exciting period of gas discovery. I returned to the UK in 2012 and joined Hess, where I returned to my petroleum systems roots. In late 2013, I joined BG Group as an Exploration Manager in their Global New Ventures team, later rejoining Shell with the company acquisition in 2016. I have greatly deepened my involvement with the PESGB in recent years, playing a technical committee and chair role in the important PETEX conferences. I am strongly aware of the impact of industry downturns and the role that our association could play in ensuring career continuity for impacted members. With this in mind, I have devised a series of accessible “basin and technical mastery” courses, which have been well received through 2015 and 2016, as well as the “Explore Your Career” zone within the PETEX 2016 event. In addition to the PESGB, I am an active committee member of the AAPG and am an editorial board member for the journal of Petroleum Geoscience for the Geological Society. These links become increasingly important as all professional associations seek to grow their memberships in turbulent times. Overall, for UK explorers, this is a significant period in our history. As the OGA seeks renewed industry investment in the UKCS and beyond, and as our exploration community seeks to responsibly understand the resource potential of the onshore, strong leadership is required to guide the PESGB to a new place. I would be honoured and excited to play a leadership role in the PESGB team that takes that forward. Whether I am elected to this position or not, I pledge to continue my support to the PESGB and our community in any way that I can.
