Helvellyn, Sunday 10 April

PESGB Cumberland-Lake District branch met Sunday 10 April  for a pub lunch in Greystoke close to M6 junction 40. Five members. Apologies for a cock-up on the meeting notice – will do better next time.

Prophetically, following our pre-Christmas meeting, we said, “ There WILL be another area meeting – life goes on!”

Indeed, currently some sector share prices have doubled, and we have $40 oil. We have seen it all before many times. Predicting the next  six months is fraught, but with US LTO off 1.5 MM BOPD by Q1 2017, the market is tightening. Shell are up 37% from January 20th. Our recent meetings seem to follow significant dumps of snow and Sunday was no exception with an Alpine scene across this beautiful geological laboratory. Climate realists take note of the actual rather than the predicted.

Most of the bridges and roads are repaired now following the floods of December 5th (except Thirlmere). The debris is minor on a global scale, but at the local level there has been a huge volume of sediment to shift at Thirlmere for example. Glenridding provided a classic example of how lake deltas form, i.e. sudden, catastrophic sedimentation after significant quiescence.

Our meeting discussed the Basal Carboniferous across the North of England, basin inversion and un-roofing, Lake District environmental issues, and global exploration plays. We will meet again before the Summer break. Sometimes there is a speaker and a presentation.

PESGB hold a list if you wish to meet up, let them know, get on the list.
