Review by Amrit Madhoo, Schlumberger
The PESGB President’s Evening 2014 was held in the marvellous London Transport Museum on December 11th. Once again, thanks to the efforts of the organising committee and the attendees the event was a resounding success. The evening began for most by following a treasure trail of pubs around the area, many of which had earned a place in the prestigious review by a Martin Whitehead, Dickie Moreton and Andy Melvin which guests were provided with in advance, in order to best prepare for the evening’s festivities!
With the winter chill closing in, for one evening members from across the industry gathered to celebrate the last major oil & gas event of 2014. And, despite the yearly challenge of hosting the President’s Evening following on so closely from PROSPEX earlier in the day, there were many attendees attracted from all corners of London, eager to catch up with old friends, take the opportunity to do some valuable networking and generally bring the working year to a close with a bang.
Returning to the London Transport Museum after four years sampling a variety of other London venues, offered guests the chance to enjoy a drink amongst some of London’s most iconic vehicles. We were greeted on arrival by a brilliant choir singing Christmas carols to get everyone in a festive mood – a few brave souls even joining in along the way!
Once inside the venue, ample and tasty food – mini jacket potatoes, curry and sausage and mash were a few of the favourites – kept everyone going through the evening, while they enjoyed climbing in and out of the new and vintage London transport vehicles dotted around on display.
A slideshow presentation ran in the background with photo highlights from PESGB events throughout the past twelve months, which gave everyone the change to reminisce about the year gone by, whilst the roving silhouette artist, organised by the YP Committee, also provided a lucky few with a lasting – and hopefully flattering – memento of the occasion.
After what has been a rather volatile end to the year for the industry, and despite the uncertainties this has brought, the event was a good opportunity for the younger society members to hear the tales of their more experienced colleagues of the ups and downs the industry has endured in the past, and perhaps feel some reassurance. Of course, there was plenty of time to cover more light-hearted topics as well during the four hours we merrily occupied the museum’s hall.
During a momentary pause in the mingling, the current PESGB President Oonagh Werngren was able to formally introduce the new President Elect, Colin Percival, and Council members for the coming year, and of course wish everyone a merry Christmas and a prosperous 2015.
A fantastic welcoming venue and a crowd of cheerful patrons meant the event was a great success and a lovely evening was had by all who attended.
The PESGB would like to thank their sponsors: Geologix, Geotrace, Hannon Westwood, Polarcus, Premier Oil, Task Fronterra and Zinc Consultants for their contributions to such a successful event.
