Reporting to the Research Advisor the Researcher will develop, implement, test and support new algorithms to improve imaging of the subsurface. The role requires you to understand the purpose of research for subsurface exploration, and the need to continuously stay abreast of technology in order to develop and improve research activities for business units and clients.
The incumbent will develop algorithms to solve a specified geophysical problem whilst validating algorithms of synthetic and real data to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the proposed approach. Supporting the rollout of new technology through internal presentations and user support as well as promotion of new technologies to clients through scientific publications and presentations is also part of the role.
Building close internal relationships with the seismic imaging operations is key to keeping informed of requirements and therefore ensuring you are able to support those requirements. You would be expected to continuously develop your knowledge by reading academic publications, attending presentations, workshops, conferences and seminars.
Required Education and Experience:
The ideal candidate for this role will be educated to PhD level (or equivalent) in Geophysics, Physics, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering or any other related technical degree. An MSc level (or equivalent) with experience would also be accepted.
Strong maths skills are essential for this role as you must be capable of abstracting geophysical concepts and mathematical languages, this goes hand in hand with fantastic analytical and problem solving abilities with great attention to detail.
Excellent coding skills are also essential for the role, particularly FORTRAN or C/C++ preferably with a knowledge of high performance computation (MPI, multi-threading, GPU etc.).
To be successful you will be highly motivated to deal with real data, solve problems and deliver high-end technological products, and have effective communication and presentation skills.
Ideally, you will have knowledge of seismic processing / imaging with experience in wave propagation, inversion being a plus.
