The rain clouds lifted across the water meadows of Millmead and Peasmarsh, the venue for the 24th annual oil industry hash event. 95 souls embarked on the 5 mile chase, as we scrambled up Greensand knolls and chalky ridges. A fine selection of vintage hash t-shirts from years gone by were on view, testimony to the history of this long standing industry favourite.

We dodged fields of bullocks, sixes of Cubs (never trust them on matters of navigation!) and dog walkers to reach our objective. Even a herd of water buffalo stood in the way between the runners (hounds) and their sustenance. ‘On! On!’ the shouts went up, as false trails were dashed and the correct route was discovered by the runners.

As the murky sun became ever lower on the horizon, we returned in good spirits with nettle stung knees to the Weyside Inn for welcomed good food and ale. Congratulations to the placed finishers (1st Sacha Henty, 2nd Richard Karlsen and 3rd Amar Dosanjh).

This event included a charity fundraiser for a local group (Challengers) that gives disabled children and young people the essential opportunity to play, have fun, learn and develop in a safe and well supported environment. At the time of going to press over £230 had be donated by our event participants – thank you.

Many thanks to Graham Dean (the hare) of Reach CSG for setting a testing, but ingenious course. Thanks also to Emma Dobson and Sacha Henty (plus their helpers) of SLR Consulting for planning and arranging the details of what I think everyone will agree was an excellently organised event.

On! On!
