Spirit Energy will spend $180 million or £139 million on E&A of the fractured basement play on the Rona Ridge, West of Shetland (WoS) in 2019.

Spirit Energy, the E&P joint venture between Centrica plc’s E&P business and Bayerngas Norge AS, will drill three wells 100km West of Shetland, to further prove up the potential of an area which holds an estimated 2 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe) in prospective and contingent resources.

Lundin Petroleum Norway recently announced it had more than doubled the reserves in Rolvsnes also a fractured basement play.

It announced a 50% farm-in to Hurricane Energy’s Greater Warwick Area (GWA) located southwest of the Lancaster Field that will come on stream in 2019 via a FPSO.

Now Spirit Energy aims to “unlock a sleeping giant oil field on the Rona Ridge at Warwick and Lincoln”.

Spirit has agreed to fund 3 firm exploration wells.  Two wells on Warwick: a crestal horizontal 204/30b-A and a Warwick Deep Horizontal 205/26b-C; and one horizontal well on Lincoln 205/26b-B. Hurricane Energy previously drilled an exploration well 205/26b-12 on Lincoln in 2016, proving up resources in the area.

If successful, Spirit and Hurricane aim to progress Lincoln and Warwick towards full field development. At the development stage Spirit Energy would become licence operator. Spirit Energy will fund 100% of the initial drilling campaign.

Chris Cox, Chief Executive of Spirit Energy, said: “Appraising the Lincoln discovery and exploring for new reserves in Warwick offers a tremendous opportunity for Spirit to participate in the early phases of resource maturation in one of the last known world-class oil development opportunities in the UK.

A single well tie back from the Greater Warwick Area GWA is expected to provide a daily production rate of 10,000 bopd and associated reserves in excess of 20 million barrels (gross),

Final Investment Decision on the first phase of a full field development is expected in 2021. Spirit goal is to unlock reserves of half a billion barrels (gross).
