Stand for the 2017 PESGB Council… as Treasurer

The PESGB are currently searching for passionate and willing individuals to stand for several council positions in 2017. The opportunity to sit on council will be both a challenging and rewarding experience, but ultimately one filled with important decision making, collaboration, and communication.

The PESGB council is a great opportunity to develop new skills for work, as well as a tool for discovering hidden skills are already have. Because help and guidance is with you every step of the way, you have no need to be hesitant in applying; a deep work ethic, communication skills, and a passionate love for your chosen role is all that is needed to succeed and develop within the council.

So whomever are you, research what skills the PESBG council could help you to develop, while also considering what you could personally bring to the council itself. Consider applying for this great optionally to surround yourself with likeminded professionals; the PESGB council is waiting.

Treasurer

The overall role of the Treasurer is to maintain an overview of the organisation’s affairs, ensuring its financial viability is secure. They will also work to ensure that proper financial records and procedures are maintained within the organisation.

Any potential Treasurer should have financial qualifications and experience, as well as some experience of charity finance, fundraising, and pension schemes. The Treasurer should have the skills to analyse proposals and examine their financial consequences, as well as the willingness to be available to staff for advice on an ad hoc basis.

In addition to the general responsibilities of a council member, duties of the treasurer include the following:

  • Overseeing, approving and presenting budgets, accounts and financial statements
  • Being assured that the financial resources of the organisation meet its present and future needs
  • Ensuring that the charity has an appropriate reserves policy
  • Preparing and presenting financial reports to the board
  • Ensuring that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place
  • Liaising with paid staff and volunteers about financial matters
  • Advising on the financial implications of the organisation’s strategic plans
  • Ensuring that the charity has an appropriate investment policy
  • Ensuring there is no conflict between any investment held and the aims and objects of the charity
  • Monitoring the organisation’s investment activity and ensuring it is consistent with the organisation’s policies and legal responsibilities
  • Ensuring that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by funders and the relevant statutory bodies, for example the Charity Commission and/or the Registrar of Companies
  • If external scrutiny of accounts is required, ensuring that the accounts are scrutinised in the manner required (independent examination or audit) and any recommendations are implemented
  • Keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities
  • Contributing to the fundraising strategy of the organisation
  • Making a formal presentation of the accounts at the annual general meeting and drawing attention to important points in a coherent and easily understandable way
  • Be a second signatory on cheques
  • Sitting on appraisal, recruitment and disciplinary panels as required
  • Sitting on SCID Committee.
