Julian Bessa

  • Provides leadership to the organisation and the Council by ensuring that everyone remains focused on the delivery of the organisation’s charitable purposes in order to provide greater public benefit
  • Chairs and facilitates Council meetings and attends the SCID and Outreach committees
  • Gives direction to board policy-making
  • Checks that decisions taken at meetings are implemented
  • Represents the organisation at functions and meetings, and acts as a spokesperson as appropriate
  • Brings impartiality and objectivity to decision-making with the Executive Director:
  • Plans the annual cycle of board meetings and other general meetings where required, for example Annual General Meeting
  • Acts as Line Manager for Executive Director as required
  • Sets agendas for board and other general meetings
  • Develops the Council, including induction, training, appraisal and succession planning
  • Addresses conflict within the board and within the organisation, and liaises with the Executive Director to achieve this
  • Liaises with the Executive Director to keep an overview of the organisation’s affairs and to provide support as appropriate
  • Leads the process of supporting and appraising the performance of the Executive Director
  • Sits on appointment and disciplinary panels
