Summary
The Carboniferous of the Midland Valley Field Trip
The Spireslack abandoned opencast mine in Ayrshire (south of Glasgow) offers a spectacular opportunity to examine many aspects of Carboniferous geology of the Midland Valley in Scotland. During this 1.5 day field trip, which will be led by Graham Leslie and Mike Browne from the British Geological Survey, we will be looking at the sedimentology, structural geology, palaeontology and economic geology of Carboniferous coal bearing strata that have been of great importance in the past. Given the recent activity around the southern margin of the Mid North Sea High, where age-equivalent rocks are found prospective, this field trip offers a good opportunity to study analogues in the field.
Price includes two nights in a hotel in the Cumnock area (single-room), travel by minibus from Aberdeen and back, pick-up from Glasgow Airport if required, Friday and Saturday evening meals, packed lunches on Saturday and Sunday and a field trip guide).
Please note, this event will be cancelled in the event of insufficient uptake.
